What is Blog Syndication?

If you’re a blogger, and you don’t know what blog syndication is, you’re simply missing out! Blog syndication helps you reach a broader audience over several different channels. Before I dive deep into what blog syndication is, I want you to get this picture in your mind.
Think about driving in your car listening to the radio. You turn to your favorite station and they are playing THAT song that you absolutely just LOVE! When it’s over, you change to another station and ‘SCORE!’ They’re playing that song too! Keep that in mind as I further explain blog syndication.
What is Blog Syndication?
First, let’s look at the word syndication. Dictionary.com defines syndicating as: to publish simultaneously, or supply for simultaneous publication, in a number of newspapers or other periodicals in different places. Syndication is the act of syndicating.
Blog syndication is the act of publishing blog content simultaneously to different places! Remember the radio example earlier, where you heard the same song but on a different station? The result of blog syndication is sharing the same content on a different to different sources!
A viewer can read your content on one web source, and then go to another web source and your blog post is there waiting for them too! Like that song on the radio, your blog post is everywhere the viewer turns!
Benefits of blog syndication
There are several benefits to blog syndication that really can’t be ignored. Here is a list of benefits of blog syndication:
- Exposure to new and broader audiences
- Increased content sharing
- Establishes you as an expert
- Quality backlinks from reputable sites
- Increased search engine rankings
- Increased traffic and readership
- Increased lead generation
- Increased sales capability
All of the benefits listed above occur over time. Don’t expect to publish one blog post, and then POOF! You’re industry expert #1! No! Blog syndication over time helps create these results. You must be consistent in your efforts!
Blog Syndication – Too Good To Be True
It’s true that blog syndication is the ideal way to get your content out to the masses, but are there downfalls? Yes. Before you decide to not syndicate your blog, because of the disadvantages, know that the ups TOTALLY outweigh the downs. Here are some great tips on blog syndication strategy.
Lower quality backlinks
We learned that blog syndication reaches across several media sources to reach a broader audience. One of the downsides to blog syndication is lower quality backlinks. Quickly, a backlink is a ‘link back’ to your site.
There are good and bad backlinks. Blog syndication increases your chance of getting some lower quality backlinks. Know that it is better to get a few good quality backlinks from reputable sites, than thousands of random backlinks from less reputable sites.
Lower lead quality
There are good leads and bad leads. Casting a wider net with blog syndication may mean generating leads that are not worth your time. You may be offering a free eBook or checklist that is of interest to your visitor, but they have no interest or ability to purchase your product or service.
There a two easy ways to weed these people out. Specifically state on your landing page who is a good candidate for your product versus who is not. The second method is to review your email marketing metrics periodically to see who has not opened your email over a specific period of time.
